An Industrial Powerhouse

Perhaps even more than its manpower advantage, the North’s overwhelming industrial prowess won the Civil War, with much credit due to Pennsylvania. The Gilded Age that followed the war continued to be prosperous for Pennsylvania as the industrial powerhouse of the U.S., and Pennsylvania exemplified that age in which a different sort of civil war—between capital and labor—became a leading feature of national life.
