Monterey Pass
July 4-5, 1863
A rainy night witnessed this minor cavalry skirmish between the Union soldiers of Brigadier General Judson Kilpatrick’s 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, and a force of Confederate cavalry under Colonel William E. “Grumble” Jones. This small Confederate force attempted to hold open its crucial gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains until the retreating wagons and ambulances from Lieutenant General Richard Ewell’s corps could pass through it. Kilpatrick’s men charged up the steep pass late in the evening, routing the tail end of the wagon train, capturing or destroying several hundred wagons, and taking 1,300 prisoners.
